EPA SA releases position statement on River Murray shack wastewater management

The South Australia Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has released a position statement on wastewater management for River Murray shack settlement areas.

Around 2,500 shacks (river holiday homes/rentals) are located along the River Murray in South Australia. As not all of these shacks are connected to local sewer network, the septic systems at these properties pose a potential risk to the health of the river if they fail.

The aim of the draft statement is to raise awareness of the River Murray Water Protection Area and the provide EPA’s position on the assessment of shack wastewater issues. The document is also intended to provide clarity to local councils on what matters the EPA will consider through the planning system.
