The Clean Energy Regulator has announced that the new method variation for the landfill gas method under the Emissions Reduction Fund has come into effect.
The method has been varied to:
- extend the crediting period for landfill gas flaring activities by 5 years and new flaring projects will receive a 12-year crediting period;
- change the default methane proportion for landfill gas from 50% to 42% for new projects; and
- revise the eligibility requirements for upgrade projects to require that new wells be installed and at least 4 years of pre-project efficiency records be provided at registration.
Landfill gas projects capture gas from waste to prevent the release of methane into the atmosphere, with the resulting reduction in emissions earning Australian carbon credit units (ACCUs).
