EPA SA searches for abestos dumper

EPA South Australia is appealing for more information to help identify the person or company that was responsible for illegally dumping asbestos and building materials near Osborne.

Six tonnes of building waste including bags of asbestos was discovered recently in a secluded area at Mutton Cove.

EPA Investigations and Tactical Support Manager Stephen Barry, said a perimeter was established on March 20 in the surrounding area to investigate the dumped material.

“Four tonnes of asbestos was removed from this area on that day and a contractor was required to remove a further two tonnes of demolition waste and building materials several days later,” Mr Barry said.

Penalties for illegally dumping waste range between $120,000 or two years’ imprisonment for individuals and a maximum of $250,000 for a corporate body.

Mr Barry said this matter was still being investigated and the EPA was keen to hear from anyone who may have seen suspicious activity, a vehicle or a truck in the area.

“Members of the public who may have seen a vehicle that looked suspicious that was travelling along Mersey Road Osborne are encouraged to contact the EPA or Crime Stoppers,” he said.

The EPA Pollution and Environment Incident number is (08) 8204 2004 or 1800 623 445 outside of the metropolitan area.
