Federal Government continues search for land to establish radioactive waste management facility

The Federal Government is calling for voluntary land nominations for a radioactive waste management facility.

Landholders in all states and territories can nominate land for a facility to safely store Australia’s intermediate level waste and dispose of low level waste, under the National Radioactive Waste Management Act 2012.

Australia has 4,248 cubic metres of low level and 656 cubic metres of intermediate level waste in temporary storage.

An advisory panel has been established by the Department of Industry and Science to assist with assessing nominations and advising the Government on which sites may be suitable for a facility.

Site nominations close at 5pm (AEST) on Tuesday 5 May 2015 with a view to selecting a preferred site by mid-2016.

Further information including details on how to complete and lodge a nomination is available here.
