Packaging Impacts Decision Regulation Impact Statement – released

The Federal Government, in conjunction with State and Territory Governments has released the Packaging Impacts Decision Regulation Impact Statement.

The statement analyses 10 options to manage packaging waste and litter, including container deposit and industry-based approaches.

The release of the Packaging Impacts Decision Regulation Impact Statement finalises an investigation by Australia’s Environment Ministers on the costs and benefits of different national approaches to managing packaging waste and litter.

The ministers have been considering the Packaging Impacts Decision Regulation Impact Statement since April, 2014.  No consensus has been reached by State and Territory Governments regarding the need for additional national-level regulation in this area.

In the absence of agreement on the need for additional national level regulation, existing arrangements, which include the successful Australian Packaging Covenant are to continue.
