Federal Environment Minister Greg Hunt has issued new rules or ‘methods’ covering how sectors including aviation, shipping, transport and coal mining estimate their emissions reductions, and earn and sell carbon credits.
- Aviation method
The aviation method sets out the requirements for implementing and monitoring offsets projects that would avoid emissions by reducing the emissions or emissions intensity of aviation.
- Land and sea transport method
A similar land and sea transport method outlines the arrangements for earning credits by reducing the emissions intensity of shipping, rail, truck transport and car travel, as well as equipment used in farming and mining.
- Coal mine waste gas method
The coal mine waste gas method sets the requirements for implementing and monitoring offsets projects that avoid emissions through the combustion of the methane component of coal mine waste gas.
- Avoided clearing of native regrowth method
The avoided clearing of native regrowth method sets out the detailed rules for implementing and monitoring offsets projects that avoid emissions by not clearing native forest. These are similar to existing rules covering credits earned from avoided deforestation.
Future methods for the land sector will include soil carbon sequestration (storage), herd management, savanna fire management and fertiliser use efficiency.
