The State Government and the Local Government Association of South Australia (LGASA) have been named the SA winners in the State and Territory Government category of the 2013 Resilient Australia Awards. Councils from the mid-north and Yorke region, who form the Central Local Government Region of SA, have also been recognised as state winners in the Local Government category, in partnership with Regional Development Australia (Yorke and Mid North) and the Northern and Yorke NRM Board.
The Resilient Australia Awards are an Australian Government initiative sponsored by the Commonwealth Attorney-General’s Department, in conjunction with States and Territories. They recognise innovative practices and achievements across the nation that are making communities safer, stronger, more resilient, and better prepared to manage any emergency situation. Sustainability, Environment and Conservation Minister Ian Hunter said the awards acknowledge South Australia’s nation-leading efforts to tackle climate change.
“We have again been rewarded for our unique regional approach in the Climate Change Adaptation Framework for South Australia,” he said.
”We are seeing results by empowering local leaders to manage the real risks of climate change, such as flooding, drought, and bushfires.
“In a shifting national policy environment, South Australia is simply continuing to get on with the job of building resilient communities,” he said.
