Parliamentary Secretary for Climate Change and Energy Efficiency, Mark Dreyfus has announced a partnership between Qantas and RM Williams to offset carbon emissions by using carbon credits generated by environmental conservation on the former pastoral property, Henbury Station, NT.
The Federal Government assisted RM Williams in purchasing Henbury Station for conservation purposes.
“The Henbury project will deliver significant biodiversity benefits, while at the same time reducing carbon emissions…,” said Mr Dreyfus.
“Qantas and Jetstar have cut 2 million tonnes of carbon emissions since 2007 and will be able to meet part of their carbon price liability through this mutually beneficial partnership.”
“This sets an example for other businesses looking to take up opportunities to reduce their carbon footprint and invest in clean energy, as Australia and other major economies make the necessary transition to a global, clean energy economy”, he said.
Mr Dreyfus advises that the Federal Government will work with stakeholders to ensure the Carbon Farming Initiative (CFI) supports carbon projects that promote agricultural productivity and avoid adverse impacts on rural communities.
